Trading Traditions: A Family Christmas in New York City
Last Christmas, we traded our small-town traditions for the dazzling lights of New York City—and it was the most magical decision we ever made. As a family of seven, planning a holiday getaway to one of the busiest cities in the world felt like a bold move. But New York, with its iconic landmarks and unmatched holiday spirit, delivered an experience we’ll cherish forever.
Arriving in the Big Apple
We arrived in New York City on a crisp December afternoon, greeted by the buzz of taxis, towering skyscrapers, and festive decorations at every turn. The energy of the city immediately drew us in. For our stay, we booked a cozy family suite in a midtown hotel, putting us just a short walk away from many iconic attractions. Even the lobby, adorned with twinkling lights and poinsettias, felt like a scene from a holiday movie.
That first evening, we bundled up and headed straight to Times Square. While it wasn’t traditionally “Christmassy,” the flashing lights and bustling atmosphere left us wide-eyed. The kids loved the larger-than-life billboards, and we took our first family selfie under the glow of the neon lights. It was the perfect start to our holiday adventure.
Exploring NYC’s Holiday Magic
New York City during Christmas is like stepping into a winter wonderland. One of our first stops was the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree, and it didn’t disappoint. Standing beneath its massive branches and shimmering lights was breathtaking. Ice skaters glided across the rink below, and the sound of holiday music filled the air. While we didn’t brave the long lines to skate ourselves, watching the joy on everyone’s faces was enough to put us in the holiday spirit.
Next, we strolled along Fifth Avenue, where every store window was an elaborate display of holiday magic. From animated scenes to glittering lights, it felt like walking through a gallery of Christmas art. The kids were especially captivated by the windows at Saks Fifth Avenue, which told a magical story through moving displays. For me, it was a nostalgic reminder of the holiday stories I grew up with.
A Day of Fun in Central Park
No trip to New York would be complete without a visit to Central Park, especially in winter. We spent a full day exploring its snow-dusted pathways and open spaces. The kids built snowmen, we took a horse-drawn carriage ride through the park, and we warmed up with hot pretzels and chestnuts from a street vendor. It felt like a slice of peace amid the city’s energetic pace.
One of the highlights was ice skating at Wollman Rink. Unlike Rockefeller Center, the lines here were manageable, and the views of the city skyline from the ice were stunning. Holding hands and skating under the open sky with the skyscrapers around us was a surreal experience we’ll never forget.
Broadway and Holiday Shows
Our family loves theater, so experiencing a Broadway show was a must. We chose to see a matinee of “The Lion King,” and it was pure magic from start to finish. The music, costumes, and story captivated all of us, from the youngest to the oldest.
In addition to Broadway, we also attended the Radio City Christmas Spectacular featuring the Rockettes. The synchronized dancing, dazzling costumes, and festive themes left us in awe. It was one of those moments where we felt truly immersed in the spirit of New York during the holidays.
Food and Festivities
Of course, no holiday trip is complete without indulging in festive treats. New York delivered on this front with its endless array of food options. We started our days with bagels from a nearby deli and ended them with hot chocolate from some of the city’s best spots. Our favorite was the decadent, creamy hot cocoa from Jacques Torres—a treat we’re still dreaming about.
We also visited the Bryant Park Winter Village, where we sampled foods from around the world, shopped for handmade gifts, and enjoyed the festive atmosphere. The kids picked out unique ornaments to remember the trip, while my husband and I enjoyed watching the ice skaters on the rink.
A Christmas Eve to Remember
Christmas Eve was the highlight of our trip. We attended a service at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, where the stunning architecture and moving hymns made for an unforgettable experience. It was a moment of reflection and gratitude, reminding us of the true meaning of the season.
Afterward, we returned to Rockefeller Center, where the tree sparkled brightly against the night sky. As we sipped hot cocoa under its glow, surrounded by laughter and the hum of carolers, we realized that no matter where you are, the magic of the holidays is all about being together.
Heading Home with Full Hearts
As we boarded our flight home, it was clear that New York City had left a lasting impression on each of us. The holiday lights, festive markets, and unforgettable experiences created memories that we’ll talk about for years to come. While we missed some of our small-town traditions, we gained something even more special—a shared adventure that brought us closer as a family.
New York City showed us that Christmas is more than a destination; it’s a feeling. Whether it’s skating in Central Park, marveling at Broadway performances, or simply enjoying a quiet moment together under the city’s glowing lights, the spirit of the season is alive and well in the Big Apple. It was an unforgettable holiday, and one we’d do all over again in a heartbeat.
