The people who shaped me
It was a plunge into the unknown as I drove my van across the nation. I met incredible people along the road that had a lasting impact on my life. Every individual I encountered imparted knowledge to me, and their tales merged with mine in unexpected ways. These are a few of the memorable figures from my journey.
1. The Beach Crew
One sunny day I was bringing Max, my dog, to the beach to cool off and get some exercise when we ran into "the beach crew". Max wasn't typically a social butterfly but he had instincts I trusted when it came to people. The group welcomed us and made me feel like we've known each other for years. We spent the day sharing stories and laughing about anything and everything. Among this small group of friends were siblings Emma and Luke, whose close bond reminded me of Jake, my own brother. Their carefree attitude and love for one another made me feel at home, even if was just for a day. I learned the importance of living in the moment and finding joy in the small things.2. George, the Wise Old Man
Not an actual image of George but a close resemblance |
I met George at a quiet diner during one of my first nights on the road. I was feeling lost and scared because this was the first time I was on my own. George was an older man that looked exactly what you'd expect an old farmer to look like. He was chatty, sparking up a conversation with me and tell me all about his life. He left me with a piece of wisdom "Home is where you feel loved". George's kindness and openness gave me optimism about the future and the courage to continue my journey.
3. Mrs. Thompson, the Neighbor
Returning to my childhood home was a more somber moment that I thought it'd be. The house had changed. What felt like a prison to me was now a beautiful home. As I sat in front of my old house, Mrs. Thompson, our former neighbor, invited me in for a cup of Joe. She remembered Jake and me and shared a story of Jake visiting shortly after he left home. Her wrinkly smile and kindness helped me feel a sense of closure. Mrs. Thompson’s stories helped me remember who Jake was and understand his struggles.
4. The Kind Stranger & the man in the car
Running out of gas on an empty road was a terrifying experience for the alone and scared girl that I was. A stranger stopped, a man a bit older than I was and offered help, but Max didn't like him and clearly warned me to be cautious. Trusting Max, I declined to get in the car. Later, an older man that reminded me of my grandfather, stopped and offered me gas. His warmth and the trust Max immediately had of him was encouraging. This encounter reinforced the lesson Jake had taught me: always trust your instincts. The man's generosity toward me, a stranger, reminded me that there are good people in the world that will happily give you the coat off their back.
5. Dr. Harris, the Vet
When Max got injured, I was desperate to find help. I remembered Dr. Harris, the vet from our old neighborhood. He had always been kind to us. I drove back to the familiar streets, hoping he could help Max. Dr. Harris helped me get Max out of my van and into his house. Dr Harris saved my best friend's life. The incident reminded me of Jake’s loving personality and how we always have more to give.
6. Jake, My Brother
Each person I met along the way added their own personal story to mine. The kindness and love of those around me helped shape my life and taught me lessons about life and love. As I look back I am grateful for the people I met and the memories they've given me.
