10 Essential Things for Van Life You Won’t Realize You Need Until You’re Out There

1. Toilet Paper

Not to state the obvious, but when you’re miles from a shop or rest stop, this little roll can save the day. On my first trip, I didn’t pack any, and the struggle was real. Now, it’s a non-negotiable.

2. Velcro Strips and Hooks

Living out of a van, the most obvious challenge is space. These are lifesavers for keeping small spaces organized. I use them to hang up anything that doesn’t have a “home” or needs to stay secure while driving, freeing up space for actual living.

3. Hidey Hole

When leaving the van, a lockbox screams “Steal me!” Instead, I stash valuables somewhere inconspicuous—a grimy sock, inside a book, or tucked into something unlikely to be picked up as valuable when someone breaks in you van. Peace of mind for free! I found the image above when I searched online but you don't need to buy anything. Just keep a dirty sock in your laundry with your cash or valuables.

4. Fleece-Lined Hoodie

This isn’t just a hoodie—it’s a warm hug from home. Perfect for chilly nights, it’s a sweater, blanket, and pillow all rolled into one. Sometimes, I’d even drape it over a seat for a bit of makeshift privacy.

5. Instant Coffee or French Press

Mornings on the road can be unpredictable, but a coffee fix doesn’t have to be. Instant coffee is a lifesaver, especially when water’s limited, if you can stand the flavor. A mini French press adds a taste of home. Nothing like a sunrise with a warm cup in hand.

6. Door or Window Alarm

It sounds intense, but a small door or window alarm can make all the difference in feeling safe at night. They’re easy to stick on and loud if tampered with, so you can park and sleep a little easier. I'd also recommend a bumper sticker or other notice so people know you have it. It's better to detract a person then alert once they are doing it.

7. Basic Sewing Kit

You wouldn’t believe how handy a needle and thread are in van life. A few stitches can fix up small rips in clothes or bags, and it keeps you from needing replacements on the go. We always seemed to have one around the house growing up. I didn't even think to buy one or grab it before I left.

8. Insulated Water Bottle (Also a Hot Water Bottle)

Insulated bottles keep drinks cold or hot, but they’re also perfect for warmth on chilly nights. Fill it with hot water, tuck it into your sleeping bag, and voilà—instant heater.

9. Portable Chair

When you want to soak in the scenery, a portable chair is a game-changer. There’s nothing worse than realizing everything outside is wet or freezing when all you want is to relax with your morning coffee.

10 Small Bag for Spare Change

Spare change isn’t just for laundry. Parking meters, tolls, and random vending machines make it surprisingly handy. In remote spots, it’s a small thing that makes a big difference.
